Hela: of Mice & Magic comes to Nintendo Switch 2 on 1 December 2026, alongside PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is the only Nintendo platform in the announcement, and it is one of the three platforms that receives a physical edition. The original Switch is not part of the line-up.

Switch 2, not Switch 1

The console named in the announcement is Switch 2 specifically. There is no Switch 1 version, no last-generation port and no separate release date for the older handheld. Anyone searching for the game on a first-generation Switch is looking for a product that does not exist in this release.

That distinction matters for two practical reasons. A boxed copy bought for Switch 2 is a Switch 2 product, and a digital purchase is tied to the same console family rather than to the original system. The four-player online ceiling and the two-player split-screen ceiling described for the game as a whole therefore describe the Switch 2 build, since no other Nintendo build is offered.

The Japanese release

Japan gets a named release: Hela:ちいさなねずみと魔法の森. The boxed version is priced at 4,400 円 including tax, which makes Japan one of the regions with a published retail price for the Harmony Edition.

The Japanese digital version has no price yet. That split is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly: the cartridge has a number on it, the download does not. On 21 October 2026 the regional store page was still listed as opening soon rather than live, which fits a listing that has no price on it.

Both versions carry the same game. The box adds the cartridge, the packaging and three extras, and it is the only one of the two with a price attached.

The Harmony Edition for Switch 2 holds the game on a cartridge inside a premium box. Alongside the cartridge sit a digital soundtrack, a double-sided poster that includes the map, and a 48-page softcover artbook titled The Heart of Hela. Microids publishes the physical release, and the print run is limited to selected retailers.

The edition is rated PEGI 3, with an age rating of 3 and up, and that applies across all three platforms that get a box. Sweden lists the Switch 2 edition at 379 kr, the same figure as the PS5 box in that market, which is a useful reminder that the retail price tracks the region rather than the hardware.

Co-op on Switch 2

The Switch 2 build supports up to 4 players online and up to 2 players in local split-screen, with a maximum of 2 players per screen. In a living room that means two people on one screen at most; online, the fourth slot exists.

Single-player remains a complete route. The Shade System summons a magical double of the player character, letting puzzles that assume two bodies be solved by one. Nothing about that changes on Nintendo hardware, and no Switch-specific mode has been described in the announcement.

The trial build that ran before launch never reached Nintendo hardware. It ran on PC for 30 to 60 minutes, with one player and 2-player local split-screen, and it had no online play at all, so there is no Switch 2 demo to try ahead of the release.

Split-screen follows the rule used across the game: two players share one screen, and the ceiling is two per screen rather than two per console. A household with two controllers has a complete two-player game on one machine, and the third and fourth players have to arrive online.

Buying the right copy

A boxed Switch 2 copy is a Harmony Edition copy. There is no other physical format for this platform, so a sealed box on a shelf is always the same product: cartridge, premium box, soundtrack code, poster, artbook. Nothing about the packaging changes by region apart from the language on the label and the price sticker.

The download is the version without a price. Until a figure appears, the only Switch 2 listing with a known cost is the cartridge, which puts the physical release in an unusual position for a Nintendo platform: it is both the collector's option and the only one that can be budgeted for.

Early copies were sold through selected retailers rather than every shop, and the run is limited, so availability is a retail question rather than a platform one.

Online and crossplay

Online co-op runs through Epic Online Services, which asks for a third-party account linked to Steam. Whether a Switch 2 player can join a session hosted on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC has not been announced.

A shared release date is not the same thing as shared servers. All four platforms launch on 1 December 2026, which says something about the schedule and nothing about whether the player bases meet.

Open questions and the wider line-up

Three things sit outside the announcement for this platform: the digital price, the store page going live in Japan, and crossplay. Everything else is settled, including the date, the cartridge, the box contents and both player ceilings.

For a buyer in Japan the choice is between a priced cartridge and an unpriced download, so the box is still the only option with a known cost. Outside Japan the box follows local retail pricing, and the download has no figure on it anywhere.

Switch 2 is one of four platforms on 1 December 2026 and one of three with a physical edition, alongside PS5 and Xbox Series X. Xbox Series S and every PC storefront are digital only, which makes the Nintendo box one of the few discs or cartridges in the launch line-up.

The Nintendo side of the release is therefore simple to describe: one console, two formats, one regional name, and no version for the handheld that came before it.
